Ceist:162 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons imprisoned in 1988 and in 1989 for (a) non-payment of fines and (b) on foot of civil committal orders for non-payments of private debts.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 111 of 7 November 1989 in which I set out the number of people committed to prison in 1988 for non-payment of debt.
The corresponding figure for 1989 is being compiled at present in the context of the preparation of statistics for the annual report on prisons and places of detention for that year.
