Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Conversion of State Vehicles to Lead-Free Petrol Usage.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

62 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice whether all vehicles owned and/or run by both the State and by semi-State companies will be converted to the use of lead free petrol; whether it is his intention to instal catalytic converters in all such vehicles; and if he will give a time scale for such works.

In so far as my Department are concerned the position is as follows:

Garda Síochána

Two hundred and seventy four of the 701 vehicles in the Garda fleet which can use unleaded petrol are currently doing so. This number will increase to 458 in the coming weeks when part of the bulk petrol storage capacity for the Dublin area is converted to hold unleaded petrol. Further progress on the conversion to use of unleaded petrol will be made as additional bulk storage tanks can be converted, as vehicles which cannot use unleaded petrol are replaced and as the number of retail outlets carrying the fuel increases.

The use of catalytic converters in Garda vehicles is being considered.

Prisons

All prison service vehicles, with the exception of two, run on lead free petrol or diesel (which is lead free). The exceptions are due to be replaced soon and it would not be cost effective to convert them at this stage.
The use of catalytic converters is being considered.
Courts
Only one vehicle is involved and unleaded petrol is used. The use of a catalytic converter will be considered when this vehicle is being replaced.
