Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Kildare Castle Restoration.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

107 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works has an interest in restoring Carbury Castle, Carbury, County Kildare; if it will allocate funds for this work or co-operate with a local group offering to undertake the work; if the building is a preserved or listed building; if any financial assistance is available for this work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Carbury Castle is registered as an historic monument under the National Monuments Acts and no works should be carried out there without the Office of Public Works being notified. It is not in State care and the Office of Public Works is not therefore empowered to spend money on its restoration. However they would hope to be in a position to offer some technical advice on any proposed works. The question of funding for a project of this nature would be more relevant to the National Heritage Council.
