Pension Entitlements:
A teacher is eligible for the award of a retirement pension and lump sum provided that he/she:
(a) has reached 55 years of age and has at least 35 years of pensionable service, or
(b) has reached 60 years of age and has at least five years of pensionable service, or
(c) has completed at least five years of pensionable service, and satisfies the Minister and the Minister for Finance that while serving he/she has become incapable from infirmity of mind or body of discharging the duties of a teacher and that such infirmity is likely to be permanent.
Teachers with at least five years of pensionable service, who retire without immediate eligibility to pension, have the option of preserving their pension rights and becoming eligible for a pension and lump sum on reaching 60 years of age.
Initial pension awards are based on the teachers retiring pensionable salary and the amount of his/her pensionable service, subject to a maximum of 40 years pensionable service, at date of retirement. Pension and lump sum may be calculated as follows:
Annual Pension = 1/80 x Retiring Pensionable Salary x Pensionable Service
Lump Sum = 3/80 x Retiring Pensionable Salary x Pensionable Service
Currently, rates of pension are increased in line with increases granted to serving teachers.
