125 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education the number of teachers in primary schools who were awarded the early retirement scheme; the number of teachers who availed of it; the average age of those availing of the scheme; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
Voluntary redundancy was offered to 462 teachers in primary schools under the early retirement scheme. Three hundred and seventy four accepted it.
The information requested by the Deputy regarding the average age of those availing of the scheme is not readily available.
126 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education the number of teachers in second level schools who were awarded the early retirement scheme; the number of schools which availed of it; the average age of those availing of the scheme; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
A total of 201 teachers — 180 secondary, 14 community and seven comprehensive school teachers — were granted the terms of the voluntary redundancy scheme in 1988. One hundred and twenty six secondary, 13 community and three comprehensive schools were involved.
A total of 37 vocational teachers in ten VECs were also granted the terms of the voluntary redundancy scheme.
The number of vocational schools which availed themselves of the scheme is not readily available from the Department's records.
