Vol. 396 No. 4

Written Answers. - Seat Belts Standards.

John Browne

Ceist:

31 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of damage done to ribs in car accidents by seat belts, he will consider changing the width of the safety belt.

The relevant Irish road traffic regulations require compulsory front seat belts to comply with specified national or European standard specifications. I have not received any representations about the width of the seat belt.

At present, the EC Commission are reviewing European standards for seat belts to take account of technical progress. If the Deputy furnishes me with details of any problems related to the width of existing seat belts, I will have the matter considered.
