Vol. 396 No. 5

Written Answers. - Community Colleges Teacher Appointments.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

90 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that in many community colleges and, in particular, at Riversdale Community College, Corduff, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, a very high percentage of the teaching staff are in temporary positions; to the fact that at Riversdale there will be 610 pupils registered by September, 1990 but that only 16 of the teaching staff will be permanent and almost as many temporary; if she will approve the permanent appointment of at least some of the temporary staff; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The question of the deployment of permanent wholetime teachers to individual schools within a committee's scheme is a matter for the chief executive officer of each VEC.

My Department's role is one of sanction only, both in relation to the filling of posts, on a global basis in each VEC scheme in a permanent wholetime capacity, and in relation to appointments made to such posts.

It is open to VECs, where they consider that the circumstances merit posts being filled on a permanent basis, to submit proposals to that effect to me for consideration.
