Vol. 396 No. 5

Written Answers. - Athy, (Kildare) School Facilities.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

93 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the number of prefabricated buildings in use at Scoil Íde Naofa, Kilmeade, Athy, County Kildare; if she will outline her current proposals for the replacement of facilities there; the number of further development stages still outstanding before the work on the extension can proceed; if her attention has been drawn to the possible fire hazard in the existing structure; and when work on the project will commence.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

94 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education when the specification in respect of heating and wiring for Scoil Íde Naofa, Kilmeade, Athy, County Kildare, will issue to the school authorities, having regard to the urgent need to undertake the works during the Easter holidays; if she will give a date for the issue of the specifications; if she will allow the work to proceed during Easter; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 93 and 94 together.

There are three pre-fabricated classrooms at Scoil Íde Naofa, Kilmeade, Athy, County Kildare. The question of the provision of an appropriate permanent extension to the school is being considered in my Department and it is proposed to discuss the whole matter with the school authorities at an early date. My attention has not been drawn to the possibility of a fire hazard at the school but, in the light of the Deputy's question I have arranged for an immediate inspection by a member of my Department's professional staff with a view to carrying out any necessary works.

My Department's engineers have not yet been able to complete tender documents for the electrical and heating works at the school. This is due to the large volume of drawing work on hands. Every effort will be made to complete the necessary documents so that the works can be carried out at the earliest possible date.

I am not in a position at this stage to say precisely when the works will be carried out.
