Vol. 396 No. 7

Written Answers. - Growth in Tourism.

Michael Moynihan

Ceist:

65 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if, in view of the projected growth in tourism over the next four years and the importance of having a high standard of acommodation in all registered and approved premises, he will initiate a grant scheme as an incentive to those in the accommodation sector to undertake work deemed necessary by Bord Fáilte.

There are no plans at present to reintroduce grant assistance for the refurbishment of tourist accommodation.

Investment in the upgrading of most categories of accommodation already qualifies for relief under the business expansion scheme. Indications to date are that the accommodation sector is making extensive use of this relief. There is also a provision in the agri-tourism scheme under the revised western package which allows farmers in disadvantaged areas to obtain assistance for accommodation where it is linked to the development of amenities.
