Vol. 396 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Donegal School.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

188 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education the reason for the proposed amalgamation of Ard Lughaidh School, Bundoran, with the proposed new college in Ballyshannon, County Donegal; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In 1989 the Sisters of St. Louis transferred trusteeship of the Ard Lughaidh secondary school, Bundoran, to the Bishop of Clogher. Enrolment in the Ard Lughaidh school has been significantly declining; the school has, currently, 209 pupils. In that light, the Bishop of Clogher sought the agreement of the Department that Ard Lughaidh secondary school be fully assimilated into the proposed community school for Ballyshannon post-primary centre.

I have agreed to the Bishop's request as I am of the view that a single post-primary school, amalgamating all four existing post-primary schools in the Ballyshannon-Bundoran catchment area, represents the best educational development for the area.
