Vol. 396 No. 9

Written Answers. - Unrest in Nepal.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

19 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs , in the context of the Irish Presidency of the EC, if he will outline the Irish Government's policy regarding the deteriorating situation in Nepal where hundreds of opposition leaders are being detained without trial; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the current unrest in Nepal. I deplore the deaths which have been reported as well as other reported violations of human rights. I hope that the rulers of Nepal will reconsider the repressive policies they are pursuing and instead promote dialogue in order that peace, respect for human rights and full democracy can be attained. The Twelve, under Ireland's Presidency, continue to closely monitor the situation in Nepal.
