Vol. 397 No. 1

Written Answers. - Arterial Drainage Scheme.

William Cotter

Ceist:

34 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works will carry out extensive drainage to the Dromore River system in Counties Cavan and Monaghan, having regard to the fact that this river links Ballybay in County Monaghan with Enniskillen in County Fermanagh and the fact that the resulting improvement to the system would make a valuable input into the development of tourism in the area; and when this work will be carried out.

Drainage works on the Dromore River system in Counties Cavan and Monaghan could only be carried out by the Office of Public Works in the context of a comprehensive arterial drainage scheme for the entire Erne River catchment in which it is situated.

A drainage scheme was prepared in 1970 for that part of the River Erne catchment lying in the State. The scheme was deemed to be uneconomic and was not proceeded with. There are no immediate proposals to renew activity in the matter as all resources for arterial drainage will be fully committed for some time to come to other drainage projects in hand. I cannot say, therefore, when a drainage scheme on the Dromore River might be considered again.
