Vol. 397 No. 2

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Air and Sea Rescues.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

12 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine of occasions in the past five years where RAF aircraft have been involved in air-sea rescues off the Irish coast; the date and location of each such rescue; the estimated overall cost to the British Government; and whether any financial contribution was made towards same by the Irish Government.

(Limerick West): The RAF search and rescue resources consist mainly of helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft. These resources are established for rescuing military personnel, aircraft and vessels. However, the RAF render assistance whenever possible to other persons, aircraft and vessels in distress, including those in distress in the Irish search and rescue region. This assistance is provided free of charge. I have no information on the overall cost to the British Government of the RAF search and rescue operations.

The statistical information required by the Deputy is in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

It is always good to have a nice neighbour. As long as the British Government provide services of this nature free of charge is there not a danger that the Government may put the report on the air-sea rescue services on the long finger? In view of the fact that the Minister has had this report for over six weeks he should now be in a position to present it to the Government and publish it so that the people who have an interest in it will know what is contained in it.

(Limerick West): As I said, the intention is to present this report to the Government very shortly once it has been exmained by my Department. With regard to the first part of the Deputy's question, as she well knows, search and rescue operations know no boundaries.

Can the Minister of State give us any indication as to when this report will be presented to the Government and when they will make a decision on it?

(Limerick West): It is my intention to present this report to the Government as soon as possible.

We have been given that reply five times today. Can the Minister of State give us a date?

(Limerick West): It will be presented once I, the Minister and my officials have examined it.

We will have to bring in remedial teachers for the slow readers.

Is the Minister of State going to recommend the publication of the report?

(Limerick West): I will submit this report to the Government and it will then be a matter for them to decide whether it should be published or not.

Therefore, the Minister of State will not be recommending that it be published.

(Limerick West): I did not say that.
