Vol. 397 No. 2

Written Answers. - Level of North Atlantic.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

27 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for the Marine if there is conclusive scientific evidence that the level of the North Atlantic is rising constantly; if so, if he will give details of such evidence; the likely consequences where sea defences are concerned; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is a body of scientific evidence which supports the view that there has been a perceptible rise in sea levels. However, there is considerable scientific debate as to the precise rate at which this rise is occurring and the relative importance of contributory causes. For this reason, as part of the Environment Action Programme, £200,000 is being allocated to study the likely effects of climatic changes on Ireland. Sea levels are an important factor in this programme.
