Vol. 397 No. 2

Written Answers. - Salary Increases.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

80 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Labour the percentage increase granted under the terms of each wage agreement negotiated from 1980 to 1990, inclusive; the average amount by which wages increased in each year from 1980 to 1990, inclusive for (a) the public sector and (b) the private sector.

The percentage increases of each wage agreement negotiated in the private and public sectors between 1980 and 1990 are outlined below. It should be noted that the pay agreement negotiated under the Programme for National Recovery represented the 26th round in the public service whereas, depending on expiry dates of the existing agreements, it represented the 27th, 28th or a combination of both in the private sector.

Information based on the Exchequer pay bill giving the estimated changes in pay per head for the public sector together with details of the average percentage increase in pay in manufacturing industry will be circulated in the Official Report.

The figures for the public sector relate to Exchequer paid public service — excluding pension and redundancy costs. The Exchequer paid public service is smaller than the total public sector in that it excludes local authority employees and commercial State bodies.
The only details available for the private sector relate to the average industrial wage in manufacturing industries.
