Vol. 397 No. 5

Written Answers. - Storm Damage Claims.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Ceist:

150 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Environment the number of claims and the estimated value of same which have been submitted to his Department following the damage caused by recent storms.

I presume the Deputy is referring to claims submitted by local authorities, at my request, in respect of storm and flood damage to public roads and to water and sewerage installations.

A total of 35 claims have been received in my Department from local authorities who put the estimated cost of remedial work at £11.1 million. A number of these claims included amounts in respect of storm damage sustained in October and December 1989 for which a special grant allocation of £1 million was notified to the local authorities concerned on 7 February 1990. Following inspections by officials of the Department, the cost of storm damage to public roads and to water and sewerage installations since the start of 1990, which may require to be remedied, has been assessed at £4.9 million.
