Vol. 397 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fish Farming.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

74 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Energy, in light of his recent decision to stop fish farming by the ESB, the studies he has commissioned on the matter; the representations which he has made to other Ministers; the representations which he has received from other Ministers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government decided on 25 January 1990 that, in view of its concern to ensure the maintenance of the existing good water quality standards at Poulaphouca, the ESB should withdraw from its fish farming activities at that reservoir. The Government also decided that the Minister for the Marine should establish a working group to examine all freshwater fish-farming activities in both the public and private sectors. The Minister for the Marine has primary responsibility for general fish-farming matters and accordingly, any questions or representations on the workings of this group are a matter for the Minister for the Marine in the first instance.
