Vol. 397 No. 7

Written Answers. - Second Level Numbers.

Mary Flaherty

Ceist:

101 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Education when the review of future demographic trends and pupil numbers with regard to second level schools commenced; the terms of reference given to the review group; if she has had an interim report; and the criteria which are currently being used in deciding on projects for such funds as are currently available.

When considering building proposals demographic trends generally and specifically those affecting the catchment area of the school in question are reviewed in depth by my Department.

Other factors considered are the level of post-primary accommodation available and within reasonable access, and the degree to which rationalisation of provisions may be required in the light of medium-term and longer-term needs.

A decision as to whether and when a project may proceed is taken when a full review on the lines mentioned has been completed and in the light of available resources.
