259 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if he will indicate the sections of the national primary road system which he intends to have upgraded and brought to an adequate standard by the end of 1990, 1991 and 1992; if he will indicate in respect of those sections the overall improved efficiency in the national primary road system which will result from these works; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Details of the major road improvement schemes on the national primary roads to be funded from the 1990 Exchequer road grant allocation were set out in a press statement which was issued on 8 February 1990. Objectives and a strategy in relation to improvement works on the national roads were set out in Chapter 3 of the draft operational programme for road development 1989-1993 submitted to the European Commission on 30 March 1989 (Pl. 6482).
A draft operational programme for roads and other transport infrastructure which has been prepared in accordance with the Community Support Framework for Ireland, has been submitted to the EC Commission. Pending finalisation of the programme, it is not proposed to indicate the major schemes to be undertaken in the period up to 1993.
