Ceist:

349 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the spending per capita on education of the school going population in Ireland and in each other EC country for which figures are available.

The estimated amounts of State expenditure, excluding capital expenditure, on education for 1990 in Ireland on a per capita basis per sector are as follows: first level £900; second level £1,525; and third level £3,550.

Structural differences between the education systems of member states of the European Community and different methods of classifying pupils and teachers do not permit meaningful comparative per capita costs at the different educational levels in the member states to be readily determined by my Department.

Spending on education by EC countries as a percentage of GNP, as shown in the most recent UNESCO Statistical Yearbook (1987), is as follows:
