Ceist:46 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice the number of moneylenders prosecuted in 1989 for extortionate activities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Prosecution of Moneylenders.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that there were no prosecutions during 1989 against any moneylender for extortionate activities. I am also informed that the Garda pursue actively all alleged breaches of the law in relation to money-lending and that it is their policy to initiate prosecutions in any cases where sufficient evidence can be gathered to warrant such action.
