123 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine the measures he proposes to take to protect the crab fishing industry off the Mayo coast for the 1990-91 season, in view of the loss of many pots last year due to fishing infringements; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
I am aware of the difficulties which have arisen with this fishery and, in particular, the alleged damage caused by certain large boats reported to be illegally fishing within the three mile limit. I have asked the surveillance staff of the Department of the Marine and the Naval Service to pay particular attention to this problem area. I have also asked the fishermen's organisations for their full co-operation in ensuring no repeat of the difficulties which arose in previous years.
