Vol. 398 No. 1

Written Answers. - Independent Nuclear Inspectorate.

Tom Kitt

Ceist:

131 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Energy if he will make a statement on the recent media revelations concerning the cover-up by the British Government at the time of the fire at the Windscale nuclear power plant.

I am aware, of course, of the recent media reports regarding the nuclear reactor fire at Windscale in October 1957. The Media coverage underlined the need for an independent nuclear inspectorate, which would ensure that vested interests could not control information relating to nuclear matters. I will continue to press at EC level and through bilateral contacts with the UK and other member states for the establishment of such an inspectorate to which I am most firmly committed.
