The administration of the registration system is a matter for the Registrar-General of Births, Debaths and Marriages and for local registrars who operate under his general direction.
There is a procedure under the law whereby, in cases of error, the records can be amended to ensure that death certificates issued will contain only the correct details. I am anxious that the records should be corrected and I have been informed that when the mother of the deceased infant called to the office of the registrar-general on 11 April last, this procedure, which involves the making of a statutory declaration, was explained fully to her by registration officials. His office is now awaiting a response from the mother to enable the matter to be rectified. I have asked the superintentent registrar of the Eastern Health Board to follow the matter up.
