Vol. 398 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Services.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

183 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the waiting lists for people with a mental handicap for residential, training and day places on the north side of Dublin are the longest in the country; if he will outline the measures he is taking to alleviate this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have allocated half of the £2 million provided in the last budget for the development of mental handicap services to the Eastern Health Board area to meet the immediate needs identified by the mental handicap planning committee operating in the eastern region.

The committee is at present identifying the urgent needs for 1991 and projected needs for the next five years, with a view to preparing a prioritised plan for further development of mental handicap services.
