Vol. 398 No. 1

Written Answers. - VHI Plans.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Ceist:

43 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Health the number of people who have subscribed to plans D and E in the VHI in each year since the introduction of these plans; the number of subscribers who pay their premia (i) personally and (ii) through company-run group schemes; the net income to the VHI from these plans; whether he considers that these plans have been effective; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The statistical information sought by the Deputy would have strategic value for other health insurers in the event of any future competition with the VHI and for that reason it would not be appropriate to publish it. In relation to the effectiveness of plans D and E, the Deputy will be aware that all aspects of VHI's schemes were reviewed by actuarial experts in the context of the preparation of the board's recovery plan, and any changes identified as necessary were implemented.
