Vol. 398 No. 1

Written Answers. - Roscommon County Hospital.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

70 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Health if the expanded services at Roscommon County Hospital, which he promised following discussions with Deputy Tom Foxe, are yet in place; if the further discussions with the Western Health Board as referred to in his reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 74 and 78 of 15 February 1990, have yet taken place; and if Deputy Foxe was a party to the discussions.

Detailed arrangements for the expansion of services at the County Hospital, Roscommon, to which I referred in my reply to the House in February last — Dáil Official Report of 15 February 1990, column 2161 — are the subject of on-going discussions and examination between my Department and the Western Health Board at present. As I pointed out in that reply, I have had discussions on the development of services in the area with a number of public representatives, including Deputy Foxe, and with the chairman and chief executive officer of the Western Health Board. I indicated that I had arranged to expand services at Roscommon County Hospital, including the appointment of a consultant physician in geriatric medicine, the provision of 20 additional beds with appropriate staffing and the opening of the acute psychiatric unit. Since that time the post of consultant has been advertised and discussions regarding the opening of the additional beds are taking place.
