Vol. 398 No. 4

Written Answers. - Stolen Cars.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

109 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, arising out of his reply to parliamentary question No. 26 of 25 April 1990, if the Garda station at Store Street, Dublin 1, compiles weekly figures relating to the unauthorised taking of motor vehicles; and if he will give the figures so compiled for the months of (a) March and April 1989 and (b) March and April 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda authorities have informed me that the statistics in question are not compiled on a weekly basis.

However, I am informed that the number of unauthorised takings of motor vehicles recorded in the Store Street district for March and April 1989 was 79 and that the corresponding figure for March and April 1990 was 67.

Ceist:

110 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the number of warrants currently in Store Street Garda station, Dublin 1, for youths known to be involved in the unauthorised taking of motor vehicles; if he will instruct the Garda Síochána to execute all such warrants; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The execution of warrants is, by law, a matter for the Garda Síochána who, I am satisfied, make every effort to carry out their duty in this respect. The Garda authorities have informed me that, at present, nine warrants, for the arrest of seven persons in relation to charges arising from the unauthorised taking of motor vehicles, are awaiting execution in Store Street Garda station. I am informed that these warrants have not as yet been executed because of difficulty in locating the persons concerned.
