Vol. 398 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers - Tax Allowance.

Ben Briscoe

Ceist:

23 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 had a tax allowance reduced; and the reason no explanation was given to the person concerned when he called to the relevant office.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer's tax free allowances for 1989-90 were reduced because he had originally been given relief in respect of life assurance premiums in excess of the maximum allowable.

The taxpayer called to the office on 9 October 1989 to query the reduction. Due to an oversight the officer on duty initially considered that the taxpayer's allowances should not have been reduced. On further investigation after the taxpayer had left the office, it became clear that the reduced allowances were correct. The taxpayer was advised that the reduced allowances were correct by letter on 13 October 1989.
