Vol. 399 No. 1

Written Answers. - FÁS Courses.

John Bruton

Ceist:

22 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Labour the present position regarding the availability of courses from FÁS for those who are (a) under 25 years of age and (b) over 25 years of age; and if he proposes to make any change in the over-all regulations governing funds for these courses, in order to allow greater provision for courses for those over 25.

In 1989, 63 per cent of FAS training activity was in respect of persons under 25 years of age and 37 per cent of training activity was in respect of those over 25 years of age. However, in 1990 activity in respect of persons over 25 will increase to 41 per cent. This represents a relative shift in favour of the over 25s, and amounts to an increase in activity for the over 25s of 11 per cent in absolute terms.

The operational programmes under the Structural Funds allow for greater flexibility in the funding of training for the various categories of trainee.
