Edward Nealon

Ceist:

68 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Marine the total cost of repairing coastal and allied storm damage along the Sligo coast as estimated by (1) Sligo County Council and (2) by his Department; and the amount of money which is being given by his Department to the county council for this work.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

69 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make available the money allocated to Sligo County Council for repairs to storm damaged piers and harbours in the county in order that Sligo County Council may start work on the damaged structures before further deterioration takes place.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 68 and 69 together. Sligo County Council, in a report on storm damage submitted to my Department in March 1990, estimated the cost of remedial works at coastal facilities to be £640,000. Following discussions with Sligo County Council, my Department assessed the costs of damage caused by the recent storms to be of the order of £200,000. My Department wrote to Sligo County Council, on 11 April, indicating that it was prepared to provide up to 75 per cent grant aid for remedial works on certain piers and harbours and up to 50 per cent grant aid towards repairs of other coastal damage.

Sligo County Council submitted applications, on 9 May, for £150,000 grant aid in respect storm damage. My Department will be contacting them regarding this within the next few days.
