Vol. 399 No. 3

Written Answers. - Detention of Passenger in Transit.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

117 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Justice the reason a native of Somalia was placed in Limerick Prison recently after disembarking in Shannon.

The person in question presented himself to immigration staff at Shannon Airport on 10 March 1990 while in transit from Moscow to Havana. He indicated that he had no travel documents and that he wished to apply for asylum. Searches were carried out by immigration officers as a result of which portions of the person's passport were discovered in a lavatory.

The person in question was refused leave to land and is now detained in accordance with law.

Inquiries are continuing in an effort to establish his nationality and identity and, in addition, his claim for asylum is being examined.
