Vol. 399 No. 4

Written Answers. - Request for Garda Assistance.

Liam Kavanagh

Ceist:

80 Mr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for Justice the reason two 999 calls for Garda assistance on behalf of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 remain unanswered to this day, given the fact that the person on whose behalf the calls were made was in danger of physical abuse and was suffering grave verbal abuse, by two youths, caught acting suspiciously, in an incident which lasted some 30 minutes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that within a three minute period on 22 May 1990 two calls were received in the Garda Communications Centre, Dublin Metropolitan Area, indicating that there were disorderly youths at the location in question and that Garda assistance was required urgently. The Garda authorities have also informed me that the calls were responded to as quickly as possible having regard to the nature of the calls and to the other demands for their services which gardaí in the area had to attend to at the time. The gardaí arrived at the scene within 30 minutes of receipt of the first call and carried out an appropriate inspection but failed to locate any disorderly youths in the vicinity.
