Vol. 399 No. 5

Written Answers. - EC Environment Report.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

45 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment the steps which have been taken by him, in his capacity as President of the EC Environment Ministers, with regard to the Task Force report on the Environment and the Internal Market; and the additional measures which are proposed in the light of that report to preserve, protect and improve the environment throughout Europe following the completion of the Communities Internal Market in 1992.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 34 of 26 April 1990 which sets out the outcome of the informal meeting of Environment Ministers which I hosted on 21-22 April 1990. One of the themes of the meeting was Environment and the Single Market.

The Task Force report on the Environment and the Internal Market formed the basis of discussion at that meeting at which Ministers agreed that economic growth should be "green" growth, that is, environmentally sustainable, and identified key issues of principle which will guide continuing Community work in this area. It is now a matter for the Commission in bringing forward proposals for the Council to shape them in the light of the task force conclusions as elaborated at the meeting of 21-22 April.
