Vol. 399 No. 5

Written Answers. - Signposting Standards.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

54 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself with the quality and standard of signposting nationally; if it is his intention to improve this area by the provision of better quality signs; if a survey should be carried out to discover the adequacy, or not, of our signposting; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied that the standard of Irish road signposting is adequate for the needs of road users generally.

A programme for the provision of adequate directional signposting on national roads funded by my Department has been under way since 1977 and is now essentially complete.

Local authorities were asked to undertake a similar programme in 1987 in respect of non-national roads. The funding of this programme would be a matter for the local authorities themselves although they may, at their discretion, meet such costs from discretionary grants for non-national roads provided by my Department.

A further programme is now being implemented in co-operation with Bord Fáilte and local authorities to upgrade signposting on non-national roads in areas of high tourist amenity. Special grants totalling £75,000 have been allocated to three local authorities, to support this programme, by my Department in 1990. This programme has been running since 1987.
