Vol. 399 No. 5

Written Answers. - Naas (Kildare) Footpaths Maintenance Funding.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

82 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if funds from the National Primary Route allocation will be made available to Naas Urban District Council to provide for the carrying out of improvements and replacement of footpaths in Naas, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Statutory responsibility for footpaths on the national primary road through Naas rests with Kildare County Council. Accordingly, the question of providing road grants to Naas Urban District Council to undertake works on them does not arise.

The normal source of road grant funding for footpaths on national primary routes is the annual road grant allocation for ordinary maintenance works on these routes. The 1990 allocation under this heading to Kildare County Council is £390,000. The development of the programme of works on foot of this allocation is a matter for the local authority. It would be open to the authority to include the works referred to in this year's programme or in future years' programmes for national primary road maintenance.
