Vol. 399 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sewage Treatment Plants.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

115 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the present position regarding proposed sewage treatment plans for Dundalk and Drogheda, County Louth; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The environment action programme which I announced in January provides a commitment to the elimination of untreated discharges of sewage from major coastal towns including Dundalk and Drogheda. There are no proposals with my Department regarding the provision of a sewage treatment plant to serve Dundalk. Any proposals developed by Dundalk Urban District Council will be considered in the context of the commitments and objectives of the environment action programme.

Proposals to serve Drogheda have been developed over the years and I recently instructed the corporation to prepare a preliminary report based on the provision of a secondary treatment plant. I am anxious that the necessary planning of this scheme will be expedited by the corporation.
