Vol. 399 No. 8

Written Answers. - Epileptic School Children.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

33 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education the proposals she has to provide proper medical facilities for children suffering from epilepsy who are attending school; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department, in agreement with the Irish Epilepsy Association believe that children subject to epilepsy should be treated as normal children in school as far as possible.

Where children have specific problems of a medical nature, parents usually inform school authorities and arrangements can be made through the office of the director of community care. The National Rehabilitation Board, in consultation with my Department, are currently preparing an information handbook on disabilities, including epilepsy, for use in schools.

Where children with epilepsy have other disabilities which necessitate their enrolment in special schools, they have access to a wide range of medical and paramedical services.
