9 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if reports that he intends licensing 200 private bus carriers to operate in Dublin in competition with Dublin Bus are correct; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
51 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will outline the up to date plans regarding the liberalisation of passenger road transport.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 9 and 51 together.
The reports that I intend to license 200 private bus carriers in Dublin are not correct.
I am in the course of considering all the issues associated with the update and replacement of the Road Transport Act, 1932, including the liberalisation of road transport passenger services. It is my intention to bring before the Oireachtas later this year a Bill to provide for a greater degree of competition in the provision of those services.
