25 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he has any plans to replace life expired locomotives; the cost of such replacement; and the share of such costs which will be borne between the EC, Exchequer, commercial borrowing by CIE and internal CIE funds.
34 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if a decision has been made on the proposal by Iarnród Éireann to manufacture diesel railcars at Inchicore, Dublin 8; and if he will give an up-to-date report on the matter.
43 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will give a breakdown of the number of rail locomotives owned by Iarnród Éireann under the following categories (a) under 5 years old (b) between 5 and 10 years old (c) between 10 and 15 years old (d) between 15 and 20 years old (e) between 20 and 25 years old (f) between 25 and 30 years old and (g) over 30 years old.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 25, 34 and 43 together.
A proposal has been made by the board of CIE to construct diesel railcars at Inchicore. This proposal, which would involve substantial expenditure by the board, is under detailed examination at present in my Department. I hope to be in a position to make a decision on the matter in the near future.
As railcars comprise both carriages and towing units they would serve as composite replacements for carriages and locomotives which are nearing the end of their useful lives.
The CIE proposal envisages the costs of the railcars being met by the board.
