A proposal has been made by the board of CIE to construct diesel railcars at Inchicore. This proposal, which would involve substantial expenditure by the board, is under detailed examination at present in my Department. I hope to be in a position to make a decision on the matter in the near future.
As railcars comprise both carriages and towing units they would serve as composite replacements for carriages and locomotives which are nearing the end of their useful lives.
The CIE proposal envisages the costs of the railcars being met by the board.
