Vol. 399 No. 10

Written Answers. - Tourist Numbers.

Joe Sherlock

Ceist:

40 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the latest figures available regarding the number of tourists expected to visit Ireland this year; the way in which this compares with 1989; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bord Fáilte's target for 1990, in line with the five year growth targets set out in the operational programme for tourism, is to increase overseas visitor numbers to some 3.2 million in 1990, an increase of over 14 per cent on last year.

While it is early days yet, inquiry levels to the board in all major markets are running significantly ahead of last year. There are positive reports from the carriers on the British, North American and European routes and from tour operators who are reporting growth in bookings.
