Vol. 399 No. 10

Written Answers. - Persecution of Chinese Students.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

70 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to recent reports that students and others who took part in last year's protests in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China are still being persecuted; and if he will protest to the Chinese Government.

The continuing violations of human rights by the Chinese authorities, including action being taken against those who participated in the Tiananmen Square events, are a matter of grave concern to Ireland and to its partners in the Twelve. This concern has been conveyed on a number of occasions to the Chinese authorities, both through diplomatic channels and in public statements. For details of the latter, I would refer the Deputy to my reply of 6 February. The Chinese authorities can, therefore, be in no doubt as to the seriousness with which Ireland and its partners in the Twelve view the grave violations of human rights in that country.
