Vol. 399 No. 11

Written Answers. - Motor Tax Evasion.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

68 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the statement made by the Secretary of his Department that the nonpayment of motor cycle and car road tax resulted in the loss of £10 million to the Exchequer in 1989; and if he will outline his proposals in this regard.

Consideration is being given in my Department to proposals for legislation to counter the evasion of motor tax and motor insurance. The question of heavier maximum penalties for offences and suitable statutory provisions to enable the Garda Síochána to impound untaxed, unregistered and uninsured vehicles are being considered in this context.

In 1990, the estimated yield from motor tax is £140 million. It was indicated to the Committee of Public Accounts that the estimated annual loss of revenue due to motor tax evasion was between £13 and £14 million.
