Vol. 399 No. 12

Written Answers. - Future of NATO/Warsaw Pact.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

24 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the recent political developments throughout Europe, which have led to a reduction in international tension, the Government will promote policies to secure the dissolution of both NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

The future of NATO and of the Warsaw Treaty Organisation is one to be decided by the members of these organisations. I note that, in the CSCE framework, they are engaged in negotiation on the levels of their conventional forces, which is a development we welcome.

For their part, the Government have stated their policy in favour of reducing international tension and in support of arms control and disarmament on many occasions. We welcome recent developments which help to reduce confrontation in Europe. Ireland will contuinue to work actively in favour of concrete measures which will support disarmament and help build greater international confidence and security.
