Vol. 399 No. 12

Written Answers. - Meeting with Secretary of State.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

38 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs when he plans to meet the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland again, in view of the apparently successful conclusion to Mr. Brooke's present round of talks with Unionist leaders; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

39 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has any plans to meet with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Mr. Peter Brooke, or any other representative of the British Government, to discuss Mr. Brooke's recent meeting with Unionist leaders and to discuss the prospects for political progress in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 38 and 39 together.

There is ongoing contact between the two Governments on the prospects for political progress. Deputies will be aware that I met with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in London on 11 June. Close contact will be maintained and further meetings will be arranged as necessary.
