A series of seminars was organised by my Department throughout the country involving 3,500 business people in 1988 and 1989 to stimulate increased awareness of the implications of the Single European Market and to ensure Ireland's business sector is prepared for 1992.
My Department produced information packs and leaflets on various aspects of 1992 and participated in the sectoral studies which were undertaken to highlight particular problems and opportunities in various sectors of Irish industry.
The major contribution by my Department in assisting with the preparation of Irish industry for 1992 is through the operational programme for industry 1989-1993, agreed within the Community Support Framework, whereby the EC Commission agreed to co-fund a series of measures to enable Irish industry to complete in the more competitive post-1992 EC market. A special unit has been established in my Department to co-ordinate the implementation of the operational programme.
