Vol. 400 No. 3

Written Answers. - Milk Price Reduction.

John Bruton

Ceist:

37 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if, in relation to the recent reduction in the producer milk price in the liquid milk areas, an equivalent reduction will take place in the consumer price of milk, and if not, the reason.

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

42 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food whether the drop in agricultural prices, particularly in the milk area, has been reflected in the prices being charged to the consumer in retail sales outlets; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

65 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will make a statement on recent reports indicating that milk suppliers were experiencing for some time consistent price reductions which are in the region of 10 per cent over the past three months; and in view of this reduction, if he will take measures to ensure that consumers will benefit from a reduction in the price of milk by up to 5p per litre in the retail price.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

78 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason the reduction in milk prices to producers of more than 15p per gallon has not been passed on to the consumer; and if he will ensure that the full benefit is passed on to the consumer.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 37, 42, 65 and 78 together.

The price reduction to the producer supplying milk for liquid milk is 12p per gallon. This reduction has been reflected in an equivalent reduction to the consumer of 1p per pint or 2p a litre with effect from 1 June.
