Vol. 400 No. 3

Written Answers. - Allenwood Power Station.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

97 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Energy if he will meet a delegation from the Allenwood Power Station Action Committee in order to discuss possible alternatives to current proposals in relation to the station; and if he will make statement on the matter.

The ESB proposed the closure of Allenwood in its 1983 strategic plan when the station had already passed its planned technical lifespan. While the closure was subsequently postponed it was clearly understood at that time that the extension would be for a limited period and generation would cease not later than 1990. The board now propose to close the station on 31 March 1991.

As this is a matter within the ESB's competence, the local committee to which the Deputy refers should seek discussions with the board in the first place.

I am at present considering the implications of the proposed closure. When all aspects have been examined, I will be glad to meet with a deputation from the area.
