It is proposed to take Nos. 17, 18 and 19. It is also proposed, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders, that: (1) business shall be interrupted at 9 p.m. and (2) the Dáil shall meet tomorrow at 10.30 a.m. and shall adjourn not later than 4 p.m.
Order of Business.
I oppose this Order of Business. I oppose each of the two proposals individually and collectively because the Government still refuse to withdraw from this House the ludicrous and nonsensical Broadcasting Bill when every day brings more and more evidence of harm that will be done to RTE and to other interests in the country. It is time the Government got the message and withdrew from the House the Bill that they clearly do not believe in, so that we can get on with constructive business, of which there is plenty.
As Leader of the Labour Party, I would like to inform you that we are opposing the Order of Business this morning. I would like to tell the Taoiseach that I am at a loss to understand the Government's haste in trying to get this Bill through before the summer recess. There is a lot of other business which the Taoiseach, and indeed the Chief Whip, informed us some weeks ago they wanted to put through this House. The long and sometimes very fracious debate that took place in this House yesterday certainly was not good for Parliament, and it looks like that will continue if the Government persist with this ludicrous legislation. I would ask the Taoiseach to reconsider the matter, to allow other business to be carried out between now and the summer recess and to see if we can deal with this matter in due course. The present course of action is not satisfactory and we will be opposing it at all stages.
The Workers' Party are also opposing items 1 and 2. We made it clear yesterday that there is other legislation which should be on the Order of Business, such as the Child Care Bill. I would like to point out also that there is no provision for a break throughout the day either for Members or staff. That is outrageous.
I am putting the question in respect of the Order of Business announced by the Taoiseach: "That business shall be interrupted at 9 p.m.".
I wish to raise a technical point. Would the Taoiseach consider a break, even of half an hour, for the staff? It might have been an oversight when drafting the initial proposals——
