Vol. 401 No. 1

Written Answers. - Budget Allocation.

Mary Flaherty

Ceist:

4 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason his Department has not distributed any of the £150,000 allocated in the January budget for Rape Crisis Centres in view of the huge workload of the Dublin Centre in dealing with rape and sexual abuse cases.

Following on the announcement in the budget of the special allocation of £150,000 to support the work of the Rape Crisis Centres, each of the six Rape Crisis Centres in the country were invited by my Department to submit applications for assistance under the special allocation. The fact that the budget allocation was a once-off provision must be an important consideration in determining how it is to be allocated.

Applications have been received from each of the six centres and the necessary consultations between my Department and the centres have now been completed.

I am conscious of the importance of the work done by these centres and am anxious that this money be available to them as soon as possible. I will be making an announcement within the next few days concerning the grants and at the same time, the organisations concerned will be notified.
